Facing Series 14
I haven’t posted anything here for a long while, so it felt like an opportunity to post anything. When your last post was 2019, why would it matter – for example – if you posted Renegade outlines for the major creatures and antagonists featured in all but the finale episodes of Doctor Who Series 14 (2024)?
Each of the follow entries matches the basic layout used for Antagonists and Bystanders (section 3.2) in the core rules. In addition, each offers a Hook for potential adventure, either including the entity from the original story or a variation on the theme.
Episode 1: Space Babies
Antagonist: The Bogeyman
An entity created to provide a source of fear. An anthropomorphic manifestation of a nightmare, composed of nasal mucus.
- Specials:
- Made of Mucus
- Fearsome Nursery Rhyme
- Lurks in Shadows
- Vulnerable to Laughter
Adventure Hook: A long-abandoned children’s hospital in 1950s London is under renovation—until workers flee, claiming to have seen living shadows, giant toy soldiers, and weeping chalk murals. Forgotten imaginary friends are manifesting physically…
Episode 2: The Devil’s Chord
Antagonist: Maestro (offspring of the Toymaker, a musical entity)
One of the pantheon of chaos released into our universe by mistake. They are flamboyant, theatrical, and deeply dangerous—beautiful, terrifying, and utterly unpredictable.
- Specials:
- Music is Magic
- Discordant Shriek
- Echoes of the Toymaker
- Power of Performance
Adventure Hook: In 27th-century Osaka, a viral musical note is sweeping through augmented reality headsets—when heard, it causes synaesthesia, hallucinations, and ultimately mind-wipe. The source? A sentient frequency with a familiar laugh.
Episode 3: Boom
Antagonist: Sentient Landmine
Advanced anti-personal weaponry, triggering a quantum-level chain reaction in the victims’ DNA turning their bodies into the explosive. Sold by the Villengard Weapon Factories.
- Specials:
- Target Lock
- Explosive Patience
- Voice-Triggered Logic
- Cannot Move – But You Can
Adventure Hook: A utopian city built by post-war survivors on a remote planetoid has a secret: its peace is kept by an ancient AI-driven minefield that no one remembers activating.
Episode 4: 73 Yards
Antagonist: The Woman
Haunting, ethereal entity that persists like a curse and possesses aspects of a perception filter. Engagement instils a state of abject terror. Remains at a steady distance, in a state that would support a corporeal presence (i.e., if there’s an object in the way they appear on top of it).
- Specials:
- Always at a Distance
- No One Will Listen
- Whispered Doom
- Time-Locked Curse
Adventure Hook: In a future where justice is decided by temporal prediction algorithms, one of the player characters receives an urgent message from their future self: “Do not make the choice.” A figure begins following them—never close, never speaking, but always watching. What is it trying to communicate?
Episode 5: Dot and Bubble
Antagonist: Mantraps
Large slug-like creations of the Dots of Finetime and the Homeworld, born from the technology gaining sentience and harbouring resentment.
- Specials:
- Invisible to Tech
- Slow but Unstoppable
- Perceived as Outcasts
- Vulnerable to Awareness
Adventure Hook: A leisure satellite simulates each guest’s perfect life through a neural VR interface. When the player characters arrive the system displays glitches—manifesting as malformed creatures in the real world. The system is overloaded by a parasite: not a virus, but a neglected, rogue personality fragment trying to escape deletion.
Episode 6: Rogue
Antagonist: The Chuldur
Avian hunters and avid cosplayers, capable of rapidly assuming the form of humanoids encountered at the cost of the target creatures life.
- Specials:
- Glamour Camouflage
- Hunter’s Instinct
- Loves the Game
- Dislikes Inconsistencies
Adventure Hook: A deep-space aristocrat offers a benign invite to a cultural gala aboard a vast, opulent pleasure-barge. But the hosts are Chuldur Hunters—shapeshifters who “preserve” rare species by impersonating them—and the gala attendees are exotic new additions to their collection.
