The historical story had a key role during the adventures of the First Doctor, but over time they started to slip out of favour or became a backdrop to a tale set in the future. The Fifth Doctor, to my recollection, had quite a few, too. Now, we can expect something from the past in every season, or more than one if we’re lucky, and ‘The Fires of Pompeii‘ doesn’t fail to deliver at any level.

Great story, great scenery, superlative special effects – the Pyrovile looked appropriately menacing throughout. The early appearance of the Pyrovile sentry really made an impact, and the whole background of secret cults and visions provided a compelling and believable setting.

Again, Donna provided wit, wailing and a little wisdom, showing her willingness to stand-up to the Doctor when it comes to the crunch. Unlike other companions, who might have allowed the Doctor to leave while swallowing back their objections, Donna shows her backbone and ability to serve as the Doctor’s back-up conscience.

And wouldn’t you love to watch the archaeologist who digs up the frieze of the household gods, with Doctor, Donna and TARDIS? (Yes, I know that frieze isn’t the right word… but, it’ll suffice until I think of the right one).

Time Crash

Having spent a week or more waiting for this damned thing, I managed to unceremoniously miss it completely – and then sat grumbling to myself about how frankly stupid I must be. Still, the Internet lives up to expectations, so not only can you access it on the official BBC site, you can also find it scattered around in other places too…

Crash Countdown

I’m getting all excited about this evening now… so much so that I’m writing this entry when I really don’t have much to say. All these pictures of Peter and David simply make the whole wait nearly too much to handle… but, I’m sure I’ll struggle through somehow and will have the recorder ready to save this 7-minute special for posterity.

I sincerely hope that the man who put the wow-factor into ‘Blink’ will deliver an entertaining, engaging and exciting micro-sode… I know that anything would be better than ‘Dimensions in Time’ (or whatever the last ‘Children in Need’ episode was called), but I’m hankering after a story that will raise it above simply just being better.

The Complete Companion

With Billy Piper leaving at the end of the season, I was set to wondering who I’d like to see filling the companion slot on the TARDIS. In all truth, I’d quite like to see the return of Captain Jack, those his involvement in the Torchwood project might make that problematic. I’m reasonably certain we need another woman – or perhaps we can go for a double companion solution.

I know the last several regnerations have managed with a single companion, but there was something quite engaging about Peter Davison’s Doctor – managing with three companions at a time, just as the original Doctor had three – Susan, Barbara and Ian. It opens up greater scope for variable reactions and makes companions a little more vulnerable. Sometimes they can bring their specialty to bear, while at other times they’re appropriately useless as simple villain-fodder.

Whatever they do, I don’t want to see a companion who’s too young… While the show aims at a younger audience, I’m not certain a younger companion would garner enough interest or respect… and almost certainly couldn’t stand up to the pressures of the role.

No… give me Captain Jack anytime, and I’ll be happy with that. Or, better yet, why not go companionless for a while. Or, bring back Sarah Jane!

Nope… still not working for me. Sorry. I can thoroughly recommend that you get a hold of a copy of Big Finish‘s excellent Spare Parts. The Fifth Doctor and Nyssa find themselves on a world living in fear of a police state, where people scrape a meagre living and a dark traders making worryingly good business in second-hand body parts. Its make for far more harrowing and entertaining viewing that Age of Steel, which somehow seemed robbed of any real substance. The Doctor’s discovery of the Cybermen’s weakness makes me long for the return of a little gold dust and a poorly protected chest vent.
